Hasselblad X1D II 50C review - is 50MP still enough to be the best medium format camera?

  • Hasselblad has just announced the Hasselblad X1D II 50C - an update of its 50-megapixel mirrorless medium format camera from 2016.
Is it still good enough in 2019, when full-frame mirrorless cameras have 47MP sensors, and when the Fujifilm GFX 100 is taking medium format to the next level with 100MP and in-body image stabilization?

Surprised and disappointed it didn't have 100mp? Then everyone would have been surprised and disappointed because it would have cost over 10k. Also the body would have to be bigger - a bigger sensor means bigger everything in terms of electronics - power consumption heat dissipation - the most surprising and not disappointing thing about the new model is that it is cheaper and that therefore makes it better!!!

    • @Artaius

It's definitely surprising and/or disappointing when there's a shiny new 100MP sensor out there, and the company gets your expectations up by hyping things like "the next chapter in our legacy" only to re-release the same camera! Though, yes, it's cheaper, and a bit better. Thing is, though, the Fuji GFX 50R is cheaper and a quite a *lot* better…

@@Artaius Hi - disagree - the 50Xr is a wonderful and lovely thing - but I have found time and time again that HAssy lenses just 'are' - couple this with the fact that the new 907x can use them too and the Hass system looks the better alternative - I have been pro for 30yrs and have never been locked into any system - mostly now I use the Phase One - for fashion and hi end commercial shoots - as it is one of the best tools on the market - however we are looking at seriously investing into the Hassy system because of the modular entity - having used the Fuji 100mpx I simply found it all a bit too much - it is supposed to handle like a DSLR - but fells like MF - having grown up with Mamiya RZ/Fuji GX680 and of course Hass500's I feel that something has been lost along the way - the slowness of MF makes you a better photographer - having more MPX's at your disposal only makes a bad photograph worse!!! - We will see - I am not convinced of the Hass system as yet - I certainly like the idea of it - my fUji GFX's will be up for sale - we use them as back up to the Phase One just in case we cannot either hire it or it goes wrong on set - which it has a done a cupla times - but the simplicity of the Hass system appeals to me the most. But of course when it comes down to it - we should always buy the tools which are right for the job not just because it has a label. Its not the camera which takes the picture - Whenever I get asked "which camera I should buy?" I always answer the same "I don't care which camera you buy, I only care what you put in front of it!!!" Have a super day and thanks for your reply - great channel - love it - keeping it real!!

Truly appreciate the honest review -- not an influencer simply spouting the brand's marketing points. I'm extremely interested in this camera, should I decide to investigate MF, but the contrast-detect AF does concern me a bit. It will be something to consider when trying one out before purchasing.

Jamie Maldonado You are right, I am a X1D owner and also tried several times the GFX 50, there is no real difference in speed and AF between the two. I prefer the X1D for its simpler and efficient user interface, its leaf shutter, Hasselblad unique color management with the Phocus software, it's integration in the other Hasselblad systems H and V.

If a fleshed-out, medium format lens ecosystem is important, Fuji GFX is more affordable, better supported, and is designed to resolve 100mp + sensors. You could buy the requisite lenses plus the GFX100 for less than the Hassy equivalents and 50mp body. If you go with the GFX 50S or new 50R and lenses, it's thousands of dollars less for the same sensor.
Really enjoying the channel so far!

I agree with what you say but if I had the money I would buy the X1D MKII (My main Cameras is a Fuji XP2). The reason is this, the X1d is slower to use than the Fujibut for this kind of photography it does not matter. The ergonomics of the X1D are better and the camera is much more compact. There is a saying that it is not the camera but the man behind the camera... this is true for 99% of situations, the quality that can be extracted today from all cameras is amazing. You can't however beat the look for a large sensor so "medium format" is always going to produce a better looking image (I didn't say better quality although it will usually also be true).

I don't think the problem is 'just' 50 megapixels. That is plenty. The problem is the focus speed. It is a grat camera size and handling wise and with faster focus you could use it for everything even street. Without faster focus it is too narrow. Come on Hasselblad ... We are rooting for you. Time for an XD2
